Everything threatens to collapse
What happened so far:
Investigator Lena Berger receives an anonymous email hinting at danger at a charity event at the Frost & Flamme restaurant, and the next evening, one of the co-owners is found dead there. While Lena investigates the connection between the warning and the murder, she notices Jonas Keller's controlled reaction. Under pressure from superiors demanding quick results, the investigation focuses on guests, staff, and business partners, ruling out robbery. Lena analyzes audio recordings from the evening of the incident to identify the decisive moment that turned routine into crime.
The name of the false suspect was written in bold letters on the protocol when Lena signed it. Everything was formally correct: motive conceivable, opportunity available, contradictions in the statements. The evidence spoke its own language. Or at least pretended to.
In the hallway, the prosecutor waited for a decision. The press was waiting for a headline. Her boss waited for silence on the line.
Lena's gaze slid to the thin folder at the edge of her desk: Anonymous Clues – Frost & Flame. The e-mails that she hadn't dared to read to anyone because they seemed too easily like crazy. Because her last spin almost ruined the life of an innocent woman.
She thought of Mia, of her second statement. The young woman had suddenly known more details than on the first night. An extra movement, a glass in the wrong place, a sound she could only now place. It did not fit the new suspect. It suited Jonas Keller.
The temptation was great to ignore this. Simply put the signature, hand over the suspect to the public prosecutor, tip the case into the statistics as "largely clarified".
Lena put down the pen. Her fingers were cold.
You could learn not to trust your instincts. But you couldn't forbid them to scream.
She got up, took the file and the folder with the e-mails. Before anyone else decided to define the truth for her, she would make sure for herself that she wasn't making the same mistake a second time.
