The night of the murder
What happend so far:
Lena Berger from the homicide division receives a disturbing anonymous email with the subject line “Information from the Public Order Office – ‘Frost & Flamme’ event.” The message hints at an imminent danger at a charity Christmas dinner, but without giving any specific details. Particularly striking is the reference to a person named Jonas Keller. As the Christmas lights outside the police headquarters flicker, Lena senses that a new case is beginning...
The city shone as if it wanted to seal up its cracks with fairy lights. Lena parked not far from the promenade, the radio ready to report in the holder, the engine still warm. Officially, she was on her way home. Unofficially, she had been sitting in the dark for ten minutes, staring at the pulsating line of the river.
She had read the anonymous tip from the previous evening twice, then filed it away. The first rule after a miscarriage of justice: don't overestimate anything that just wants to sound like drama. And yet he did not let her go. One of you won't be going home this year. Words that gnawed at the back of your head.
She forced herself to turn the ignition key. Another appointment awaited, one that had nothing to do with service and which she concealed just as consistently as her mistakes.
The emergency call came just as she was getting out. High-pitched voice, adrenaline in the radio channel, the brief message from the control center: male person lifeless in the "Frost & Flame", resuscitation attempt is underway, police called.
For a moment she stood still, between the open car door and the cold night air. Then she closed the door as if she were locking something inside of her and reached for the blue light.
The private detour dissolved like breath in frost. There was now only one direction: promenade. Crime scene. And the question of whether an anonymous threat had become the truth tonight.
